Lybrel Birth Control Pills

Some women noticed mild increases in weight while taking Lybrel or its generic equivalent Amethyst. But this weight gain is usually mild and temporary. It’s often because of water retention.

Some women shouldn’t take hormonal birth control pills if they have a history of medical conditions like cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, blood clots, or diabetes. Smoking while taking birth control dramatically increases the risk of serious adverse reactions to birth control, including blood clots. You shouldn’t smoke anyway, but especially not while taking birth control.

All medications come with a small risk of an allergic reaction, including itching or a skin rash. If you notice these symptoms while taking a medication like Lybrel, stop taking it right away and call a doctor. Seek immediate medical attention and call 911 if you experience signs and symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, like trouble breathing or swelling of the lips and tongue.

You can’t get the brand name Lybrel anymore because it was taken off the market. This wasn’t because there were concerns over its safety or effectiveness, but simply because of the financial impact of having cheaper alternatives. That generic alternative of Lybrel is called Amethyst. Amethyst is easy to get at any typical pharmacy, but you’ll need a prescription for it. Lybrel works like other birth control pills, namely by preventing the release of an egg from an ovary (ovulation). It also makes vaginal fluid thicker, so it’s harder for sperm to reach an egg. Plus, it’ll make changes in the uterine wall so that if an egg does become fertilized by sperm, the egg will be less likely to attach to the uterus (womb).

Unlike other birth control pills, Lybrel and its generic equivalent Amethyst only contain “active” pills and no placebo or “inactive” pills. To take Lybrel’s generic equivalent Amethyst, simply take one pill every day at the same time. Most birth control manufacturers recommend taking your pill at night or with a large meal if you have concerns about nausea. When used correctly, birth control pills are up to 99% effective at preventing pregnancy!

Lybrel (rather, its generic equivalent) doesn’t cause infertility. Research even suggests birth control pills may reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, including ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer. While your fertility will temporarily be affected while taking Lybrel, it should return to normal soon after stopping Lybrel, and you can get pregnant right away. Most women notice normal fertility and normal periods within about one to three months after stopping Lybrel.
