How to Use Depo-SubQ Provera 104 injection?

Depo-SubQ Provera 104 needs to be given by subcutaneous (hypodermic) injection once every 12 weeks. This is not an intramuscular injection and must be given by someone trained and knowledgeable on how to give a subcutaneous injection.

Depo-SubQ Provera 104 Active ingredient

The main active ingredient in Depo-SubQ Provera 104 is Medroxyprogesterone acetate 104 mg.

Depo-SubQ Provera Side Effects

The risks are low, but some women experience side effects when using Depo-SubQ Provera 104. Minor ones include breakthrough bleeding (spotting) or some gain weight. Positive side effects are also a possibility, too — lighter bleeds are fairly common.

The chances of serious side effects from birth control pills are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented, such as unexplained vaginal bleeding, severe pelvic pain, severe abdominal pain, and bone pain.
Depo-SubQ 104 has been associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD). However, pregnancy results in a greater potential loss of BMD. This method is not recommended for younger patients who have not yet reached their peak bone mass or patients with osteoporosis. Alternatives to Depo-SubQ Provera would be the pill, patch, ring.

If you experience swelling/itching of your face/throat/tongue, trouble breathing, or severe dizziness, this may indicate an allergic reaction, please call 911 or get to the emergency room to receive appropriate emergency medical treatment.

What Is Depo-SubQ Provera?

Depo-SubQ Provera (also known as Depo Provera) is a birth control injection you get every 12 weeks, it is a hormonal birth control method. It prevents pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation), and thickening the cervical mucus, blocking sperm from getting into the uterus and creating a fertilized egg.

If you have high blood pressure or take blood pressure medications, this medication is NOT for you. Instead, Pandia Health Medical group’s doctors recommend progestin-only pill (POPs), IUD with hormone (Mirena, Liletta, Kyleena, Skyla), implant (nexplanon), and/or condoms and spermicide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clinical studies show that women using Depo-SubQ Provera 104 experience weight gain. It can/will give you munchies and may affect you metabolically. So if you can compensate by decreasing unhealthy snacking, decrease high caloric foods and instead opt for diet soda, water, sugarfree gum, etc. then you should not experience a noticeable weight gain.

Always make sure to tell your healthcare provider is you are taking any other medications before using Depo-SubQ Provera 104 to avoid experiencing adverse effects. Drugs that may interact with Depo-SubQ Provera 104 include: HIV protease inhibitors, anti-seizure drugs, and even herbal supplements like St. John’s wort. Our expert birth control physicians always review the medications and supplements you’re currently taking before prescribing Depo-SubQ Provera 104. Certain drugs (recreational, over-the-counter, or prescription) can interact with Depo-SubQ Provera 104 and make it less effective at preventing pregnancy.

Depo-SubQ Provera 104 does NOT prevent sexually transmitted infections. We recommend you use a barrier method of birth control such as condoms to prevent sexually transmitted infections and get tested each year for HIV and chlamydia if you are under 26 years old and sexually active.

If you choose or have to pay out-of-pocket, Depo-SubQ Provera 104 is $122 per injection, which works out to roughly $1.45/day. However, Depo-SubQ provera has a very low chance of pregnancy, probably around 3/1000 women in the first year of use vs. the condom which is 130/1000 or the pill/patch/ring which is 70/1000. (The research with depo-subQ of 2042 women had 0 pregnancies at 1 year on the method.) Extra fees for delivery might apply because it is a fragile delivery.

Don’t take Depo-SubQ Provera 104 if you’re allergic to any of its ingredients. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction to Depo-SubQ Provera 104 are rare and usually very mild and may include itching, hives, or dizziness. Injection site reactions may occur, be aware that dimpled skin near the injection site is NOT a sign of allergic reaction. Serious allergic reactions to Depo-SubQ Provera 104 can occur in very rare cases. Call 911 immediately if you experience swelling in the lips, mouth, or tongue, or if you have a hard time breathing.

Depo-SubQ Provera 104 isn’t for everyone. There are certain risk factors to be aware of such as a history of medical conditions like undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, breast cancer, or disorder of the blood vessels of the brain should not use Depo-SubQ Provera. Pandia Health’s expert birth control doctors are happy to help you find the best and safest birth control and get a prescription for it.

Depo-SubQ Provera 104 is only available by prescription and you should be able to get it at all pharmacies. It is very important that you are taught how to give yourself the shot or have a nurse or Medical Assistant give it to you if you don’t have the appropriate training.

No. Depo-SubQ Provera 104 does not cause  infertility. If you’re taking Depo-SubQ Provera 104 and want to have a baby, talk to your doctor. Normal fertility can return within 12 weeks after your last shot. However, for some people it takes 1 year after the last shot to get back to regular fertility.
