How to use Prometrium

As part of a menopausal hormone therapy, a woman with uterus who is taking estrogens should take a single daily dose of 200 mg Prometrium Capsules at bedtime for 12-14 continuous days during a 28-day cycle. It is important to follow the recommended usage instructions for Prometrium to achieve the best results. Take the capsule orally, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. It is generally advised to take Prometrium at bedtime to minimize potential side effects like dizziness or drowsiness and to contribute to better sleep. Stick to a consistent schedule and take the medication at the same time every day for maximum effectiveness.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it’s almost time for the next dose, only take that dose. Taking two doses at the same time is not recommended.

Prometrium Side Effects

While Prometrium is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience mild side effects. These can include:

• Dizziness
• Headache
• Breast tenderness
• Mood swings
• Nausea
• Bloating or water retention
• Changes in appetite

Serious side effects are rare but can include an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and certain types of cancer. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience:

• Chest pain with or without shortness of breath, weakness or fatigue
• Severe headache
• Changes in vision or speech
• Signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, tongue, mouth or throat)

Prometrium Contraindications

You should not use Prometrium if you have any of the following conditions on your health history:

• Allergic to Progesterone or any ingredients in the medication.
• Allergic to peanuts.
• Have abnormal vaginal bleeding that has not been checked by a doctor.
• Have history of blood clots: Women with a history of blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism) should avoid using Prometrium since it can increase the risk of blood clot formation, which can be life-threatening.
• Have a history of heart attack or stroke: Women with a history of heart attack or stroke should generally avoid using Prometrium. The medication can increase the risk of cardiovascular events in individuals with a history of these conditions.
• Breast cancer: Women with a history of breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers should generally avoid using Prometrium. It can potentially stimulate the growth of hormone-sensitive tumors.
• Liver disease: Severe liver disease or liver tumors are contraindications for the use of Prometrium.
• Pregnancy: Prometrium may cause harm to the development of the fetus.
